Care for the dying

Description

Considerable importance shall be attached to the wishes of the patient and his/her next-of-kin regarding whether the patient shall be at home or in an institution during the last stages of life. If the sick person is at home, both the patient and relatives shall receive sufficient instruction in use of medicines, pain relief equipment and other aids. The patient has the right to receive information about persons in the health service who may be contacted as and when necessary.

Care and respect for the individual is particularly important when encountering dying persons and people with incurable illnesses. The patient must receive assistance so that his/her final days are felt to be meaningful. The patient shall live such as he/she wishes to the greatest possible degree.

Target group

Administrative procedure

Administrative procedure

The municipality shall obtain the necessary information in order to determine the matter. Normally, we will undertake a visit in the home. A decision is consequently made. In addition to the municipal help at home, support may be sought from the special health services. Normally a reason is given for the decision at the same time. You will always be given a reason if there are grounds to believe that you will not be satisfied with the decision. If the reasons are not stated, you may ask the municipality within the time limit for making an appeal.

Administration time

The municipality shall consider your application as soon as possible. If the matter cannot be determined within one month, you will be informed of this in writing with the reasons for the delay. At the same time you will be informed when you may expect to hear of the municipality’s decision.

Possibilities to appeal; procedure

If you are not satisfied with the decision, you may appeal to the municipality within three weeks of having been informed. Explain why you are dissatisfied and why you feel the decision should be changed. If you need assistance, you may ask the municipality. If the municipality upholds its original decision, the matter will be sent to the county governor, who will decide whether the appeal may be allowed.

You may also appeal about the manner in which the services are carried out. This should be sent to the municipality or those carrying out the service.
