Absence from primary and lower secondary school

Description

The Education Act (primary and secondary education) describes two types of leave of absence:

  • When it is defensible, the school may permit absence from school for up to two weeks.
  • Pupils who are members of a religious community other than the Norwegian state church have a right to absence on religious holy days when the parents ensure the necessary education during the period of leave of absence.

Criteria/conditions

  • For absence of up to two weeks: The school will determine whether leave shall be allowed. Leave may not be granted for more than two weeks at a time.
  • Leave in connection with holy days: Parents must ensure that the pupil undertakes education during the period of absence so that he or she is able to follow normal classes upon his/her return to school.

Administrative procedure

Administration time

The municipality must consider your application as soon as possible. If the matter cannot be determined within one month, you will be informed of this in writing with the reasons for the delay. At the same time you will be informed when you may expect to hear of the municipality’s decision.

Possibilities to appeal; procedure

If you are not satisfied with the resolution, you may appeal to the municipality within three weeks of having been informed. Explain why you are dissatisfied and why you feel the decision should be changed. If you need assistance, you may ask the municipality. If the municipality upholds its original decision, the matter will be sent to the county governor who will determine whether the appeal will be accepted.
