Leave of Absence from School
Primary and secondary school
General information
The Education Act deals with two different kinds of leave of absence from school:
- When considered appropriate, the municipality, by the headmaster, may upon receipt of an application grant individual pupils leave of absence for up to two weeks.
- Pupils who belong to a religious community outside the Church of Norway have, upon application, the right to be absent from school on those days their community holds to be holy. This right is conditional upon the parents ensuring necessary instruction during the period of leave, so that the pupil is able to keep pace with instruction when the period of leave is at an end.
The municipality is under no circumstances allowed to grant any pupil absence of leave from compulsory education for a period of more than two weeks.
You may contact the school for assistance to apply for a leave of absence.
If your request is denied, you have the right to complain within three weeks after you have recieved the answer. The complain is to be sent to the school, by the headmaster.
